After you have listened to the lectures for each lesson you need to post a comment about something that you found interesting. You also need to post a follow-up comment on two(2) other students comments on the lectures. (If there are no other students comments in the topic then you only need to post your own comment).

Lesson 1: God is at home. It is we who have gone out for a walk. (Meister Eckhart) As we evaluate that comment, in a prayerful manner, we should feel guilty and feel a desire to come closer to God. We all have strayed like sheep from God and we have a longing placed into our soul to return home to God. God’s home is in the Christian because we are his temple so when we walk away from God we are also walking away from ourselves. God is in our soul and when we listen he speaks to us and is our companion through life. He has become part of us and if He we make Him the center of our lives, He is the center of our being. Therefore when we walk away from God we are in danger of losing ourselves. To come home to God literally requires a journey into your own interior world. Many people read the Bible, go to church and try to do good things and never get to know God or themselves. Any approach that does place God in the center and possesses a passion for God that is greater than anything in their lives will only result in pressure and either a sense of disappointment when it doesn’t work or a sense of self pride if it does work. The journey to God is a journey into your own soul. when we walk away from God it is because we are deceived into believing we need something other than God or that we are walking toward God as we really walk away. We cant place our emphasis upon what we need to do to get our lives straightened out, that places us at the center, not God. When we remove God from the center, we have taken a walk from God. We fail to see the flesh dynamics and we lose hope because no matter what we try, it doesn’t work. We need SoulCare with people who can become sacred companions to join us in our journey and to show us there is a way home and how to get there.

Lesson 2: This was a tremendous review of the basic model of SoulCare as we have studied it to date. You need a biblical anthropology, which is a good understanding of who, what and where a person is, and you need a biblical hamartiology which is a theology of sin and flesh dynamics. Freud taught that the dark forces in the human soul were a result of poor socialization, evolution gone wrong, and other exterior influences. SoulCare teaches the dark forces in our soul are a result of rebellion against God. The second difference between secular Psychotherapy and SoulCare is the realization that a healthy soul is totally in love with jesus and one that is not is a deformed unhealthy soul.

Lesson 3: Secular soul care, which began around a hundred years ago by Freud, denies Biblical firm truths. It has become a depersonalized industry requiring technical experts as opposed to personal involvement required in SoulCare. The new world view is rapidly turning their interest toward spirituality, which on some levels, opens the doors for more churches to entertain the concept of SoulCare. The fear, of course, is that we repeat our mistakes made a hundred years ago by professionalizing and turning it into a greater desire for money than the desire to help people return to God. A deep soul to soul relationship is absolutely vital for SoulCare to take place. Three preventive suggestions were made to help guard against this potential disaster. We need to de-professionalize SoulCare, slowly push the financial gains to the secondary concern of SoulCare, and most of all we need to re-personalize Soulcare. The church should be the primary location and source of spiritually connected people to provide SoulCare. Unfortunately, right now, most churches are not safe places to share your inner most secrets, faults or ugliness. People in need of SoulCare need a Spiritual friend as a guide through their journeys and or a spiritual director as a guide for their spiritual searches. Spiritual relations organically grow within the spiritual community which is not accepted by those who believe that only highly trained people can properly guide someone home to God. Current beliefs are leaning toward identifying soul issues as either psychological or spiritual referred to as soul pathology and soul hunger. A shift is occurring more towards seeing many of the previously labeled pathology issues as matters of the soul. it is the belief of Dr. Crabb that they are one and the same and should be treated as SoulCare. The mission has more to do with bringing the soul home to god than anything else.

Lesson 4: Lets consider flesh dynamics, which presumes there is no such thing as innocence as the root cause of our problems as opposed to psychological dynamics, which presumes innocence. The underlying issues always point back to our desire to make life work without God. If we are to move ourselves and or our churches towards SoulCare we need spiritual companions who provide grace filled relationships but we also would need spiritual directors to provide wisdom, discernment and to encourage the release of the holy tension within us. We need to see this kind of movement in our churches. A movement away fro professional psychologist to spirit filled SoulCare providers. Obviously we are not seeing our people in our churches, right now, renouncing their position in this world to become lights for Jesus. we must discover our brokenness and know that the reality is that God fixes us in our brokenness. Our shift has to be from a worldly influenced interior world to a Christ influenced world which moves us to resemble Christ. First we have to develop a vision and see what a church filled with SoulCare companions, friends and directors would look like. This vision helps to establish goals because you know where you want to be based upon the vision. God promises us that he will show us the way providing we make him the central most important aspect of the core of our soul. In all our trials God is always with us. he guides us with his counsel and anoints us with internal wisdom. he gives us a new heart and places a new spirit within us and tells us because of this we can trust the deepest desires of our hearts. The model for spiritual direction is; its possible to enter flesh dynamics and know whats wrong, God will show you the path home, and our deepest desires are from God. The key to spiritual growth is simple, “Love God and do whatever you want”. If you love God, what you want to do is exactly what he wants you to do.

Lesson 5: There are two distinctives of spiritual direction. (1) Spiritual direction that is rooted in biblical theology and not merely a tradition assumes that there is a goodness in a Christian person waiting to be released. If that’s true then the work of discipling what is bad and bringing what is bad under control is best achieved through the passionate release of what is good. (2) Whatever inclination towards goodness becomes apparent in the life of a non-Christian is false and it can not be trusted because it comes from the springs of self-centeredness. Only conversion to Christianity gives people the new heart. Understanding these distinctives will make you aware that your desire is not to fix or comfort the person you are working with but to see the goodness , the new life that is in Christ that is in that person, come to the surface and be released. The rhythm of release is spiritual direction that follows the holy Spirit in following his movement so that you are a part of the rhythmic of the Spirit that leads to the release of who the person really is. We have a choice of two paths we can take to attempt to know God. We can try to follow the law which only leads to stress, heartache and failure or we can follow the path of Jesus in the new covenant which leads to peace, joy, happiness and fruits of the spirit. The law verses relationship with Jesus are the choices. The goodness inside a Christian is a gift from God as a new heart in the New Covenant. This goodness can be released with the help of a Spiritual Director or companion providing they understand the rhythm and follow the holy Spirit as he leads.

Lesson 6: If one does not feel called to be a spiritual director, perhaps they have been called to be a spiritual friend. The difference between the two is intention opposed to depth. Spiritual friendship shares Christ-like passions which releases a mystical presence of Christ during the interaction of the two friends. The Holy Spirit involves himself to the point that a Christ likeness is stirred and both move closer to relationship with God. This of course requires you to be a safe person without judgment and an excited person about Spirit of God working in each of you. Jesus said in Mathew 18:20 “…For where two or more come in my name, There am I with them.” This is referring to relating on the biblical foundations of who Jesus is and the path he has provided to us. he promises that when you gather in His name and Christ like passion is released, in that moment he will be there. Our dependence upon God provides strength we need to resist sin and to love one another more deeply. There needs to be more spiritual friendships than directors but a spiritual director must also be a spiritual friend if for no other reason than to prevent the feeling of spiritual elitism. Jesus’ promise to bind what we bind and to loose what we loose, in His name of course, is a parallel meaning of his giving the keys of the kingdom of heaven to Peter, (his disciples and for that matter all the followers of Christ. The base meaning behind these scriptures is a promise that when we come together in His name for purposes agreeing with biblical theology, we will accomplish our objective. The gates of hell will not prevail. Jesus has given us that authority and will release His life in us so we can become more like Him. There is a power in spiritual friendships and Jesus promises us He will be there to bless our spiritual friendships.

Lesson 7: when we get saved we become aware that we are no longer in Eden and there is no way back. Life does not get easier nor do friendships, marriages, small groups or churches work as we would desire. We never lose our need for spiritual encouragement from spiritual friends. Fortunately, as Christians, even life does not get easier it does get better and we are able to experience deeper levels of joy. If we are to be spiritual friends we need to understand that and enter into peoples lives where they are, when they are, and how they are. there is a way forward and that is a deeper relationship with God. Life doesn’t work so well and will get worse until we finally get to heaven. god’s plan isn’t to remove or lessen those problems rather to use them to draw us into deeper relationship with him. We can not believe that living a righteous life will guarantee a comfortable life on earth. If this were the case, our evaluations would always turn judgmental in that we would wonder what the person did to cause the pain and sorrow. Our tendencies as Christians are to put up false fronts and always appear to be fine, happy and at peace with god and man. this creates a body of pretenders which results in false hopes for all. We think that once we figure out what we are doing wrong, because God is faithful, things will get straightened out. We need to figure out that when we became Christians the Holy Spirit moved into us and began showing us the correct path to life, which is contradictory to our previous path. when we realize this, we give up false hope and acquire real hope, hope that when we loose and or bind things, (in Jesus’ name) here on earth then god will loose and bind them in Heaven and Christ will encourage us with his love. Our journey through life is not controlled linear law but the law of liberty which is a belief that God will honor desires other than spiritual growth. many times lesser dreams will be shattered to make room for larger dreams or to show us our real dream is a deep relationship with God. We also need to understand that god is in control and does not always agree with our agenda. His taking us through a journey, we may not agree with or like, that will result in an ultimate closer relationship with him which translates as ultimate joy and peace. The journey through life is governed by the law of liberty which, no matter what is happening in your life, you have the freedom to draw nearer to God. Life is not about making things easier or more pleasant, it is about building an eternal relationship with God. Let go of the lesser dreams and let the Holy Spirit place within you eternal dreams of unimaginable magnitude that will dwarf any earthly dream we could ever imagine. god’s control does not guarantee comfort, it guarantees spiritual growth and a relationship with him.

Lesson 8: The meaning of church, as it is defined recognized and accepted in our society today, should be changed to reflect a group of Jesus followers who talk meaningfully to each other as they move closer to God as a community of spiritual friends who worship together centrally and relate to each other meaningfully. Many people today do not find relevance in church partly because they are going more to receive than to give. No matter how bad things are in our lives we should still come together to worship God which gives to others and glorifies God. church is not simply a place to come and comfortably worship and raise your hands during worship and to obtain a feeling of self righteous worth. Church is a community of people who are doing battle against their worst enemy by coming boldly into the throne room of God, absolutely abandoning themselves to whatever He wants to do to them, in them, and through them, so that the central battle against sin in their own hearts is won and they then move out into the world to represent Christ. Many of our churches have become only shadows of churches motivated by desire for attendance, larger buildings and money. Church can be two or three people coming together in His name because He will be there with them. Three characteristics of church are people are stirred by the study of God’s word, they struggle well with life and they serve each other. The four elements of church are safety, vision, wisdom and spiritual power. The church needs to be centered in abiding in Christ, focused upon the greatest desire of our hearts to have a relationship with Him, waiting upon the Lord and having enough sense to get out of His way.

Les son 9: before Jesus died he asked God to make his people one, the way Jesus and God are one, which is called a perichoretic relationship. In this type of relationship people are entering into the inner most part of each other’s being and causing an arousal that results in the two becoming more than the one. Hidden life develops and a newly developed or discovered life springs forward. This is the exact type of relation that exists within the Trinity. Small groups are a wonderful way for SoulCare to take place providing you are all in agreement and are meeting in Jesus’ name. The two fundamental pillars of a successful small group are that you all have a covenant pertaining to what where, and why you are meeting. The second is to have a format that establishes the how you are going to do it. If you have been offended by someone in your group God has instructed us to try all things possible to reconcile. If you cant and your spiritual community has agreed that you have done all you can then you are to not include that person in your circle of fellowship. Get together with people with whom you are in agreement with upon the pursuit of God because in such an environment, God has promised to bless. This blessing .will cause people to lose their own interests and to unite for the purpose of glorifying god. It is good to establish a covenant that all will agree to based upon the purpose of why you meet, what will be permitted , absolute safety, and the format within which you will conduct these meetings. Hebrews 10:24 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds”. Establish your group with the intent dedicated to intentional spiritual formation, to encourage supernatural movement toward the vision of each group member, to enhance relational styles by grace environments, and to energize the cycles of spiritual growth in each other. This cycle is brokenness, repentance, abandonment, confidence and release. Do not get discouraged if things do not happen as quickly or exactly as you planned. keep in mind that as you meet in the agreements of your covenant and in Jesus’ name, God promises he will be there and bless the outcome.

Lesson 10: Small groups are an ideal way for SoulCare to develop and be put into application. A format used by Dr. Crabb provides a good model for the purpose of moving the small group through an organized process to enable them to remain focused ant to help the Holy Spirit accomplish what the group has agreed upon and God has blessed, SoulCare. The agreement needs to be in the form of the covenant discussed earlier and the meetings should be at least two and one half hours not including the time for all to share in a meal and perhaps lighter conversation. There are seven activities provided which will help get a group started and if followed will help enable them to become involved in meaningful relationships for SoulCare. (1) The Sacrament of delight (2) The discipline of truth (3) The opportunity to hear (4) The call to community (5) The emergence of vision (6) The P.A.P.A. prayer (7) the fellowship of the table.
