After you have listened to the lectures for each lesson you need to post a comment about something that you found interesting. You also need to post a follow-up comment on two(2) other students comments on the lectures. (If there are no other students comments in the topic then you only need to post your own comment).

Lesson 1: God is my Counselor. Too many times I forget that. So many times I turn to other resources. I pray that I can ALWAYS remember this and turn first and only to God and His word for counsel, direction, comfort, peace and safety. The Lord is my shepherd.

I have forgotten that so many times as well. This first lesson was very well worded to make you think and rely on the Lord, Our God.

Lesson 2: I never really thought about the people who developed the systems and processes for counseling as having been given their genius and motivation by Satan for the purpose of leading people away from God. That is very enlightening. I can see it.

I see what you mean as the people who developed the counseling ways. I believe that some of the philosophical leaders of the world that he speaks of were in part believers at one point or children of believers.

Lesson 3 I have heard and read about denying yourself and taking up my cross and following Jesus, all my life. Somehow, Hoekstra has brought a new and deeper meaning to that scripture. Too often we take critical scripture too lightly. That is a shame because that causes us to miss out on all that God has to offer.

Lesson 4: Hoekstra refers to glorification as a form of sanctification. He says sanctification is past, present and future. I get the past and present, kind of. Sanctification means being set apart for God’s use. It seems once we reach the time for glorification, sanctification will have all ready happened.

Lesson 5: The word is clearly the most powerful method of God’s council to us. The Holy Spirit, prayer and church follow in the stated order. This is my opinion as without God’s word, we would have a much more difficult time. The Holy Spirit and prayer could get it done but the Bible is alive and a great resource.

Lesson 6: The Holy Spirit teaches us, convicts us, and guides us into truth. He is a mighty comforter and oh so humble. Of the Godhead, He is the One I hear the least about. Jesus said the Holy Spirit was being sent to glorify Him. He truly does that.

Lesson 7: Praying the prayers in the Bible is a great idea. I have done some of that but I see that I can improve upon that dramatically.

Lesson 8: The way the church was explained is absolutely amazing. It is all there in the Bible. We do not go to church, we are the church. There is an exciting guide for how the church should function which is FAR beyond what I have ever experienced in buildings of people calling themselves a church.

Lesson 9: We are told that all believers should be involved in counseling and further iterated that they must be abiding in Christ and living and walking in the word. I have seen too any Christians providing counsel that do not appear to be doing that. Much damage to the church is done that way. That sort of activity can cause a non-believer or a weak believer, to turn from God and lose faith.

Lesson 10: Abiding in Christ, walking in and living His word equips us for ministry and counseling. That also equips us for everything else. I would love to find a church that actually functions as the Bible instructs.

Lesson 11: These scriptures, given in the lesson, are great material for a sermon as well as counseling. I love it.

Lesson 12: God’s promise to never let us be tempted beyond our capacity to withstand has been a verse I have relied upon many times. Sometimes the way out isn’t clear or doesn’t come when I think it should, but it always happens.

Lesson 13: You are either in Adam or in Christ. Satan or God. There are no other places to reside.

Lesson 14: The old man crucified and the power is given to us to resist sin. The old man was a slave to sin and the new man is free from the bondage of sin. Our bodies are the same, until the resurrection, they still desire sin, but now we have the power given to us, from God, to resist those sinful desires. Praise the Lord. I look back over my life and I can clearly see continual changes in my desire for self, my desire for sin and the way I feel about it all. It truly is a work in progress.

Lesson 15: Our bodies have sin in them, including our brains. This sin does not go away when saved rather the sin in the body stays and wars with the spirit. God’s grace is required to overcome the desires of the flesh, even after we are saved. We can’t do it without God’s grace. To do so is carnal and walking after the flesh instead of walking with the Spirit. Because of the sin in our bodies, we must receive glorified bodies in order to enter heaven, where sin can not exist.

Lesson 16: Unless we are walking by the spirit, we are not God’s children. That is pretty heavy stuff. I know that many, no most of the time, I try to do things myself. I intend to work on that, through prayer and humility, immediately.

Lesson 17: We are made new creatures and our identity then needs to be established. We are to find that identity in Christ. That is so powerful. I would imagine that might scare some non-believers. To completely die unto yourself, to totally become a new person who forgets about the past dead old man, is what we struggle with. It is so simple yet our flesh makes it so difficult. Thank God we have the Holy Spirit and the promises of God to overcome.

Lesson 18; We can renew our minds by thinking upon Jesus, His life, His words, His desires and His example. We are to set our minds upon Heavenly things and let go of earthly thoughts and desires.

Lesson 19: The description of Satan, given in Ezekiel and Isaiah, should alert everyone as to the power and magnitude of the enemy. However, we should stand in the victory that has all ready been won. But recognize that we as humans are no match for Satan without God.

Lesson 20: The devil has been defeated. We have all ready won. Our focus should be upon sharing the gospel with all the non-believers and helping to comfort and strengthen the faith of believers.

Lesson 21: I never really thought about integrative counseling as forsaking Jesus, but this lesson and the supporting scriptures are quite clear.

Lesson 22: To utilize psychotherapy instead of God’s word, is a curse. It is obvious that God wants us to have nothing to do with it.

Lesson 23: I must admit that the thought of being a counselor is something I have always been opposed to and I have resisted all thoughts and in most cases all learning of this subject. I have taken courses as required in various situations but I have never embraced the thought. I must say that I believe that I have now learned what counseling is really all about and I am excited.

Lesson 24: To be noble like a Berean. I can say I rarely if ever go home from church and research the message of the sermon and research it in the Bible, for Biblical truth. I usually think I can tell if it is Biblical truth or not. I like the idea of researching the Bible to make sure if it really is or isn’t Biblical truth.

Lesson 1, and I got to say breaking down Psalm 23, I never saw it more than where we usually hear it, i.e. during funerals. I am learning to open my mind to all the different ways that a verse can go when reading His word. I have learned thru many of my life experiences to lie down in green pastures and wait on the Lord to see me thru my troubles.

Lesson 2: I found interesting the of John 10:10, the thief come to steal, kill, and to destroy. In so many aspects of the world today, there are countless thiefs ready to take what we have. We must trust in him to be the light, and truth.
