Before we can engage Scripture deeply, we must first learn how to receive it.
In a world shaped by speed, distraction, and constant noise, it is easy to approach the Bible with the same habits we bring to everything else—quick reading, surface understanding, and a desire for immediate clarity. But the Word of God invites a different posture.
It invites attentiveness.
It invites stillness.
It invites humility.
Module 1 focuses on what the Christian tradition has often called purification. This is not about perfection or moral achievement. It is about gently allowing God to reorder our inner life so that we can hear Him more clearly.
Drawing from The Ladder of Monks and the teachings of John Cassian, we begin to see that the greatest obstacle to encountering God in Scripture is not the text itself—it is the condition of our own hearts. Distraction, restlessness, and divided attention can keep us at the surface, even when we are sincerely seeking God.
In this module, we will begin to slow down.
We will learn to recognize the habits that keep us from attentive reading. We will explore what it means to listen with the heart, not just the mind. And we will begin practicing Lectio—reading Scripture in a way that is receptive, patient, and open.
This is the beginning of the journey.
Not toward more knowledge, but toward deeper attentiveness.
Not toward mastering Scripture, but toward being shaped by it.
