Kingdoming Well Part 9
When Jesus came the first time, He inaugurated the Kingdom of God. He will consummate the Kingdom when He returns. His message was that the Kingdom of God had come, the rule and reign of God was available now to all who received the message of the Kingdom, the gospel, the Good News. Those who receive the message of the Kingdom are the church. The church is the instrument of the Kingdom of God. The church is made up of those who are ruled by the King of the Kingdom.
When Jesus came, He went first to the people of Israel.
Matthew 15:21-28 (NIV)
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.” 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” 25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. 26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
When he sent his disciples out to minister, he told them to go to Israel only.
Matthew 10:5-8 (NIV)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
There are some instances where Jesus ministers to Gentiles, but each of these instances were out of the ordinary. Along with the Caananite woman in our Matthew 15:21-28 passage, there is the encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4:1-42 and with the Centurion’s servant in Matthew 8:5-13. Jesus primary mission was to let the people of Israel know that God was fulfilling His promises to them so that they could experience the life and destiny they had been created for.
The people of Israel, however, reject Jesus and the proclamation of the Kingdom.
Luke 6:6-11 (NIV)
6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
When the people of Israel reject the offer of the Kingdom of God that Jesus gave to them, their opportunity to be the people of God’s kingdom was taken from them.
Matthew 21:43 (NIV)
43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.
The people it was given to is the church and we are to produce the fruit of the kingdom of God. The church starts with the small group of followers that received the message of the Kingdom that Jesus gave them and who committed their lives to Jesus and the proclamation of the Good News and it continues on in those of us who believe and accept the message of the Kingdom in Jesus. We become a part of His family, His brothers and sisters in the Kingdom.
Mark 3:31-35 (NIV)
31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” 33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. 34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
The church is the instrument of the Kingdom of God. We are to demonstrate life in the now and not yet of the Kingdom. We are not only to preach, we are also to do the things that Jesus did.
Jesus gave us the keys to the Kingdom as He placed them in the hands of Peter.
Matthew 16:13-19 (NIV)
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
The church is built on the rock of Jesus as Messiah. Nothing the enemy can do will prevail against the church. What the church binds on earth will be bound in heaven, and what the church looses on earth will be loosed in heaven. Binding and loosing does not mean that God will automatically do whatever the church speaks. Binding and loosing means that church will operate in this age with a measure of the power of the age to come. The church is to be sensitive to what God is doing and He will empower us to move into those things. We, the church, as the instrument of the Kingdom, need to be willing to use all that we have and are for His kingdom.
Matthew 25:14-40 (NIV)
14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’ 21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ 22 “The man with the two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.’ 23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ 24 “Then the man who had received the one talent came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ 26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28 “‘Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
We are to be involved in the mission and message of the Kingdom until our King returns!
